A Macomb County Sheriff's deputy saved a driver having a medical emergency behind the wheel last week by pulling an action movie move, officials said.
Deputies were called at about 2:18 p.m. Thursday to a location on southbound Gratiot Avenue in Mount Clemens for a report of a silver GMC Sierra pickup truck driving erratically near Church Street, the Macomb County Sheriff's Office said.
They came across the truck on Gratiot near Remick Drive, officials said.
Deputies activated their vehicle sirens and lights but the driver failed to stop and continued traveling at about 5 mph, county authorities said.
Authorities said deputies pulled alongside the truck and saw the driver appeared to be in a daze and unable to comprehend their requests. At some point, the motorist rolled down his window and briefly applied the brakes.
A female deputy sitting in the passenger side of a patrol SUV exited the vehicle through her window and climbed into the pickup through one of its windows on the driver's side as they both continued traveling down the avenue, officials said.
The daredevil deputy was able to stop the truck once she got inside it, officials said. She then called a family member and confirmed the 63-year-old driver has a medical condition.
Police said Clinton Township firefighters arrived and rendered aid to the driver before taking him to a hospital.
"I commend Deputy Miron for putting herself in harm’s way to help a citizen in need and protect otherdrivers on the roadway," Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said in a statement. "Due to her quickthinking and selfless actions, she safely ended what could have been a tragic situation."
